Social Dilemma: Why Does My Good Job at Work Just Get Me More Work?

Today's 98.3 TRY Social Dilemma came from Carol, and it's about work. Here's her email: Hi Jaime. I'm really upset and I'm not sure what to do. Is it just me or is there no legitimate value to working hard anymore? I’ve always prided myself on being a dedicated hard worker who completes things on time and correctly. Meanwhile, I’m watching most of my coworkers fool around, taking extended “coffee breaks,” and seemingly get half the work I’m getting done completed. Here’s the rub, though. My corporate overlords see this and are now giving me their projects because they know that with me it’ll get finished quickly and correctly. So, essentially, my hard work is being rewarded with MORE WORK? I can feel myself getting more and more bitter and jaded with each day. How can I approach my bosses with this and not come off as a complete whiner? I just want either a fair workload or fair compensation for what I know I’m bringing to the table. Thanks for the help ~ Carol. I can understand how Carol is feeling bitter. BUT, there are a couple of things I would do. It's not worth it to pay attention to what other coworkers are doing. Just do your job and do it well. Secondly, I don't think there's anything wrong with asking for more compensation. Go into the boss with a list of things you've done that deserves more compensation, but don't compare yourself to others. That never ends well. That's my take anyway. What advice do you have for Carol. Let me know on the TRY Facebook page.
