Is It Normal to See Possums in Your Backyard During the Day?

So yesterday I was sitting in my living room with my little buddy Leo (my dog) and suddenly he starts barking like crazy out the back door.   It happens all the time.  Leo will bark at anything.  If a leaf blows by, he barks at it.  He barks at the shadows of birds that fly overhead.  Anyway, after about two minutes of him barking, I get up to see what it is, and I see this big huge possum in our backyard.   Now I've seen all kinds of animals in our backyard...stray cats, rabbits, raccoons, squirrels, etc.  But I've never seen a possum out in the daytime.  He (or she) was trying to get under the shed in the backyard which is where a lot of animals make their home when it's cold.  I don't mind him staying there, but I want to make sure it's normal for a possum to do this.  I always thought possums stayed away from people and that they only came out at night.  So please let me know if this is something I need to worry about, or if it's okay that he live under my shed til the weather gets warmer.  Help me out please.  Thank you so much!
