Today marks the one-year anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel, and New York Governor Kathy Hochul has directed flags on state buildings to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset in honor of the victims. In addition to this, several landmarks, including the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, the walkway over the Hudson State Historic Park, and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Mid-Hudson Bridge, will be illuminated in yellow to show solidarity with Israel and the hostages still in captivity.
According to the official website of New York State, Governor Hochul stated, “One year after the horrific atrocities committed against the people of Israel, my heart goes out to the victims and their families. New York stands with Israel — today and every day. As the home of the largest Jewish population outside of Israel, we will do everything in our power to defend against the forces of hatred and stand firmly against those who perpetuate it.”
In addition to these measures, Governor Hochul has directed the State Police to enhance security and heighten surveillance around critical infrastructure hubs, synagogues, yeshivas, mosques, community centers, and other at-risk areas. This increased security presence will remain in place over the next few days.
New York is not the only state marking this somber anniversary. The Algemeiner reports that multiple US states, including Iowa, Arkansas, New Jersey, and Montana, will also lower their flags to half-mast today to honor the victims of the attack.
