Social Dilemma: Is It Wrong for Me To Tax My Kids' Allowance?

Today's 98.3 TRY Social Dilemma is about kids and allowances. Here's the email: Hi Jaime. My neighbor's think my wife and I are being cruel parents, so I wanted to get your take on this. We believe in taxing our kids' allowance. We tell them they're getting 10 bucks a week, but we only give them 7 dollars. We explain to them all about taxes and how we have to pay them, and so do they. We think it's a great idea to get them ready for the real world. However my neighbor was really upset when we told him this and said we were being cruel. He said that kids should be able to be kids, and they'll learn soon enough about the government and taxes, just like we did. Do you think we're being cruel? I think we're teaching a lesson. The kids by the way are 9 and 12. Thanks so much for your help ~ Jason. My take, I don't think it's necessarily cruel, but I don't think it's necessary and I would never do it. I'm a believer in letting kids be kids. We're all grownups for a long time if we're lucky, Take those early few years and let them be filled with joy. What do you think? Let me know on the TRY Facebook page.
