Teddi Mellencamp shared an emotional tribute to her father, legendary rocker John Mellencamp, when he received the iHeartRadio ICON Award during the 2026 iHeartRadio Music Awards, saying that her father “saved” her life amid her cancer battle.

Teddi Mellencamp, 44, a TV personality and podcast host, said her father is “bring honored as an icon, a legend, a hitmaker. But to me, he’ll always be dad.” She said people often want to know about her experience growing up with a rockstar father, and to her, it was no different than most father-daughter bonds. However, she couldn’t help but think, “I can’t believe this man is my father,” when she hears his music on the radio in an Uber, or a stranger’s rendition on stage at karaoke night.

Teddi Mellencamp went on to share that “Longest Days,” which John Mellencamp released in 2008, is “the song that means the most.” She quoted the lyrics: “Sometimes you get sick and you don't get better/ That's when life is short, even in its longest days.”

“It was a little over a year ago when I got sick,” Teddi Mellencamp reflected. “My life felt short even when the days in the hospital seemed to go on forever. Sometimes you get sick and you don't get better. He [John Mellencamp] wasn’t going to let that lyric define my life. He stepped up, took control, fought for me, and pretty much changed my life. (He) saved my life. We're celebrating the icon, the artist, a man the whole world knows is John Mellencamp, a man I get to call dad and my best friend.”

John Mellencamp, 74, joined his daughter on stage before engaging the crowd in a sing-along performance of some of his classic hits. He sweetly handed the ICON Award back to Teddi Mellencamp, telling her, “that’s yours.”
