Next year’s Oscar Awards are introducing a new category: Achievement in Popular Film. At this point, we’re not sure what the criteria for the category will be, but it’s thought that it will honor films that are commercially successful. In the past, many of the films nominated weren’t necessarily the most popular (think "The Shape of Water" vs "Black Panther"). Another thing we’ll see in the upcoming kudofest is a shorter run time. They’re going to do their best to keep everything within a three-hour window...and pass out "selected" awards during the commercial breaks. The changes come after last year’s Oscar telecast was the least-viewed in its history. We’ll see how it all works out when the 2019 Oscars airs on February 24th. I like this idea. What about you? Let me know what you think!
