Last night Fox aired another one of their live musicals. I LOVE when the TV networks do this. It's a chance to feel like you're at a live Broadway play, only you're watching in the comfort of your own living room. Last year NBC put on Jesus Christ Superstar and it was fantastic. And before that Fox aired Grease live, which was equally as good. So I had high hopes for Rent Live! I'm a big fan of that show and the idea of seeing it live on TV was exciting. Well, it didn't end up being that exciting. First off, Rent Live wasn't live at all. The night before, the actor who plays Roger (one of the leading roles) broke his foot during dress rehearsal. Because of that, Fox chose to air the taped dress rehearsal instead of having an understudy go on. The electricity is not the same in a taped performance and I thought you could feel that. Plus, I'm a believer that actors don't give their all during a dress rehearsal because they're saving it all for show night. Secondly, the cast was uneven, some of them were incredible like Vanessa Hudgens and Brendan Victor Dixon Others not so much. The really cool thing about the show was that at the end (which was finally live), the original cast of the Broadway show came out to perform Seasons of Love. That original cast had some major stars in it like Idina Menzel, Taye Diggs, Jesse L. Martin (of Law & Order fame), Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal. So that was pretty exciting to see. But overall, I was super disappointed in Rent (not so) live. What about you? Did you watch? What did you think? Let me know on the TRY Facebook page.
