Local Singer/Writer Sarge Blotto, aka, Greg Haymes, Has Passed Away

Greg Haymes was an important part of the Capital Region arts and entertainment scene for almost 40 years. He started out as a singer in the band Blotto, which had a hit with I Wanna Be a Lifeguard (see the video below). They made history being the 34th video ever to be shown on MTV when it first started airing. Not long after the band broke up, Sarge, aka Greg Haymes, became a writer for the Times Union and other papers. He had a lot of knowledge when it came to music and you would often see him at concerts in the area. He also started his own blog, Nippertown, which was a place to go not only for reviews and information on acts coming to town, but also for the history of music here in the area. I knew Greg. He was a nice man, he was very smart, he had a good sense of humor, and he will be missed. He was a mainstay in the Capital Region and it's hard to believe that he's not going to be around anymore. Greg Haymes, aka Sarge Blotta was in his mid-60's and died due to cancer. Rest In Peace Sarge! Do You have any memories of Greg Haymes (Sarge Blotto)? Let me know on the TRY Facebook page.
