Sad news this morning as we found out that the Catskills Hotel that was the inspiration for the film Dirty Dancing has burned to the ground. When the writers of the movie Dirty Dancing saw Grossinger's Catskill Resort Hotel, they knew they had to write a movie about it and the culture it cultivated back in the 60's. So, they wrote the iconic movie. Dirty Dancing came out in 1987. Sadly Grossinger's closed in 1986. There was talk about it reopening in 2017, but nothing ever came of that. And the buildings that remained were left in major disrepair and falling apart. So it was no surprise to hear that a fire had taken one of the last buildings on the lot. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation. I can remember going to Grossinger's in the 70's with my cousin. I thought it was one of the coolest places ever. And of course, watching Dirty Dancing, it certainly made all of us want to go to such a sweet place where your days would be taken up by dance classes and swimming. With all the talks of a new Dirty Dancing sequel starring Jennifer Grey, we'll have to wonder if somehow they write this sad part of the story into the movie. We'll keep you updated.
