Was I Scammed By a Violin Player in the Parking Lot of a Store? Help Me Out

So I may have been scammed over the weekend. Let me know what you think. I really hope I wasn't, but this is what happened. I'm in the Holiday spirit. So this weekend, I went shopping with some friends at some stores in Massachusetts. As I'm walking into one of the stores, I hear great violin music. So I walk over to watch this young woman play her electric violin and I'm amazed. I'm witnessing something very cool. She's playing next to a sign saying she has brothers that are hungry and she's helping mom get money for rent. I'm all the way in and had 10 bucks and I give it to her. I told my friends about it and they told me I was scammed. They said they see this stuff all over the place. I was really moved by it and wanted to help. I'm not worried about the money if it was a scam. I know I did the right thing. The rest is on her. But I really hope it wasn't a scam. What do you think? Have you ever seen this before?
