I did something on January 1st that I've never done before. I went on something called a First Day Walk. Basically you're starting the year, the "first day," with a walk in a State Park. We chose Olana State Park because we had never been and it looked beautiful. Plus it was in Hudson so not all that far away. The walk was only a mile and a half but it was up a fairly steep incline, up a mountain to the mansion that Fredric Church built for his family on the property. Olana State Park was Church's land back in the late 1800's. Well, despite my being very hesitant about it, I ended up having a really great time. First off, there were lots of people from all over there, ready to take the walk. Secondly, despite the workout it gave me, it felt really good to get my body moving, and lastly, the park is beautiful. Sure it's the winter so the trees and the lawn is waiting for Spring to come back to life, but the views were lovely. And the mansion....just gorgeous. We only took a walk up the hill to the mansion, but next time, we're going to take the tour of the house which apparently is filled with Victorian furniture and art. My sister who passed away, loved Victorian art, so I think it will be a way to feel closer to her. All in all, though, I recommend it. There are plenty of walks that are not on steep inclines. Just short walks through State parks all throughout the month of January. Think about doing it, especially if you've never done it before. It was a new experience, and I'm so glad I did it!
