Mohawk Hudson Humane Society Needs Our Help!! Now Is the Time to Adopt!!

We always love talking with our friends at the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, but we are in a crisis situation, and we need your help. The Humane Society is over capacity. And they are in need of adopters, foster families and more. They reduced the cost of adoption to $50 over animals over 1 year and $100 for animals under a year. Read the press release below and if you can help, now is the time to do it! We all love our animals, but we need to help these furry friends now.

Meet our Pet of the Week Winston who is three and a half years old. Hi there, I'm Winston and my friends say I'm a TON of fun! I'm a goofy guy who is sure to bring your house plenty of laughs - all I ask for is some love in return! Other than hanging out with my people, my favorite thing to do is eat some tasty treatos! I'll even show you my best sit and down to get some, and I'm sure I can be persuaded to learn a few more fancy tricks. My ideal home would be an active one with older kids, if any. I could see a canine sibling in my future, but we would have to meet first to ensure we're a good match, of course. I would, however, do best in a home without cats or other small animals. If I sound like I could be your next best pal, fill out an inquiry form and schedule a time to meet me!

Winston and so many of his friends need a home now. If you've been thinking about adopting, now is the time to make that move.

Facing Sheltering Crisis, Mohawk Hudson Humane Society Issues Urgent Plea to Adopt and Foster

Menands - The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society strives to give every animal in its care every chance they deserve to have a loving home. Through medical and behavioral care, animals who come in abused, injured, ill, or otherwise in need of rehabilitation, have been increasingly finding safe haven and hope within the shelter.

For at least the past 8 years, MHHS has not had to euthanize for space. But today, a mounting animal welfare crisis that has been playing out all across the US and locally is forcing the Society to seriously reconsider that possibility.

Today’s census includes 262 cats and 126 dogs. The shelter has 85 dog kennels. MHHS currently shelters strays for the cities of Albany, Watervliet, Schenectady and Troy, and the Town of Colonie. In 2022, dog intake from those five municipalities increased by more than 43% and made up 90% of the Humane Society’s stray intakes. This year’s numbers are trending even higher.

“We need adopters. We need foster families. We are reducing fees to just $50 to encourage people to adopt now. Many of our animals have been with us a long time and they are beloved by our staff and volunteers. But without adopters coming forward, we are going to have to make some heartbreaking decisions,” said CEO Ashley Jeffrey Bouck. “We’ve been talking about the lack of kennel space in our community and the need for more municipal support. We have a finite amount of space and we cannot be the only solution.”

While MHHS is contractually obligated to accept municipal strays, they are letting community members know that owner surrenders and intake of stray cats are on hold until further notice.

The adoption fee for all animals age 1 year and older is now just $50. The fee for animals under 1 year of age is $100. To meet available pets, please visit https://mohawkhumane.org/adopt/available.
