Social Dilemma: Did I Punish My Son Too Harshly For Mocking Women?

Today's 98.3 TRY Social Dilemma came from Jackie, and it's about disciplining her son. Here's her email. Hi Jaime. I had a problem with my son and I'm wondering if you think my punishment was too harsh? have two children, a 17-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy. Recently, my daughter showed me some comments that my son was making on some online posts with his friends. He was mocking female soccer players, saying they didn't know how to play and that they should go back to the kitchen. In other posts, he made comments about how women only care about money and are only useful for household chores. I was saddened and irritated by his behavior; I've always tried to educate him to respect women. I confronted my son, and he said it was just a joke, that he wasn't serious and that it was how his friends joked. I had a long conversation with him and decided take away his computer for a month and told him no video games for the same time period . I also made him cut off contact with those online 'friends' of his. He was very upset. My husband agrees that our son was wrong but thinks I was too harsh on him. He says I should have given him a chance to redeem himself, that he's just a teenager, that he will grow and change. I don't think I'm overreacting; I believe he needs to understand that his actions have consequences. What do you think? Help us out. Thanks so much ~ Jackie. Well I believe in discipline, but I don't believe in doing something that might make a child more insecure. I think I might have made him volunteer at a women's organization. Or made him tell his friends that it wasn't cool what he did and he won't be participating in that kind of talk anymore. Something where he takes responsibility but also isn't cut off from his friends. That's my take anyway. What do you think? Let's help Jackie out and let me know on the TRY Facebook page.
