Social Dilemma: Can I Ask My Family to Leave Their Phones Home on Vacation?

Today's 98.3 TRY Social Dilemma came from Tyler and it's about a low tech vacation. Here's his email: Hi Jaime. My wife and kids have been on me to go on a fantastic vacation for Spring Break this year, and it honestly sounds great to me. I want it to be a REAL vacation, though. How do you think it would go over, and how realistic would it be, if I agreed under the condition that everyone left their phones at home…and we, as a group, only brought one smartphone with us for emergencies, tickets, and general information. I don’t see the point of spending thousands of dollars on a big trip just to watch us all glued to our phones playing games and scrolling social media. Is this something that can work at all in this day and age? Thanks for the help ~ Tyler I understand how Tyler feels. I know when I go on vacation, I try to only use my phone to take pics and for emergencies. It's not always easy. So I'm not sure everyone will be willing to leave their phones behind. Plus, if their phones are part of what makes their vacation fun, isn't that taking some of the joy away? I would try more to get people to leave the phones behind when everyone is out to dinner or doing something special, but that's just my take. What do you think? Let's help Tyler out and let me know on the TRY Facebook page.
