Social Dilemma: Should I Be Paying for My Adult Visiting Daughter's Food?

Today's 98.3 TRY Social Dilemma came from Barbara and it's about taking care of your family and their friends. Here's the email: Hi Jaime. For the big eclipse, my daughter decided to fly in from Georgia and invited a work friend to enjoy the moment with her, and, in turn, us. The guy is quite literally a walking, talking, real-life version of Sheldon on “Big Bang Theory.” They arrived on Friday and will be with us until next Friday. One thing I’ve noticed, though…for a guy who’s apparently making a ton of money as a research scientist, he’s got no interest in whipping out his wallet for anything. After the first two days of buying groceries and a couple of meals, I finally started asking for separate checks…which my daughter was mortified by, saying it made us look “cheap and ungenerous.” I pointed out that she could’ve offered to pay occasionally, too, but opted not to. Now, things are tense, and my “guests” aren’t feeling “welcome,” according to my daughter, anyway. Did I really step over some kind of line here, or am I in the right…especially since they’re not leaving until Friday? I feel like my daughter should know better and her guest should have offered to pay for something since he's staying in our home. Was I rude or shouldn't they chip in? Thanks ~ Barbara I don't think Barbara is rude. I know that when I visit my sister, I always offer to pay for dinner and any groceries we need. Just because I'm staying at her home. Sometimes she accepts it, sometimes not but either way, the offer is there. I think Barbara's daughter and her friend should absolutely offer to pay for the extra expense of food. What do you think? Let's help Barbara out and let me know on the TRY Facebook page.
