Social Dilemma: Should I Be Forced To Buy My Niece's Artwork?

Today's 98.3 TRY Social Dilemma came from Ellen and it's about supporting family. Here's her email: Hi Jaime. I'm so annoyed. Check this out. I have an 18-year-old niece who decided to become an artist. She’s gotten a lot of great reviews from the art world and has a small show coming up. Most of her art is abstract but she has a few other types of pieces that I don’t know how to describe. Long story short is she’s charging a minimum of a thousand dollars for some of her work and up to 5 grand for others. My brother, her uncle put out a text that we should all try to buy a piece of her art at the show to give her as much support as possible. I don’t agree with this at all. First of all I think most if not all of her art is not my thing and well, ugly, and wouldn’t hang in my shoe closet and I don’t have a thousand dollars to shell out on something I cant use or love. So am being a bad sister or bad aunt for not wanting to buy some of her art? Isn’t just going to the art show enough support? Thanks ~ Ellen I'm with Ellen on this and it was wrong of her brother to try to pressure family members into buying the art. If Ellen's niece is as good as it sounds, she'll make it on her own. I agree in showing up for the show, but that's it. A thousand dollars for art is a lot of money. Too much to ask anyone to spend, family or not. That's my take anyway. What do you think? Please let me know on the TRY Facebook page.
