Social Dilemma: Should I Let My Kids Spend All Their Piggy Bank Money?

Today's 98.3 TRY Social Dilemma came from Jerry, and it's about kids and money. Here's his email: Hi Jaime. I need help from other parents. My kids have some ridiculous savings in their piggy banks right now... like $400-500 after 10 years of never spending it. Now, when I say "no" to something, they offer to pay for it themselves... but, I think as a parent I have ultimate veto rights, but other parents might disagree and say it's a good money lesson for them to blow it all. Should I let them blow the money they've spent all this time saving, or should I veto any big purchase, even though it's their money? Thanks for the help ~ Jerry. I used to love saving money in my piggy bank (I still have one). And then being able to buy something I really wanted. That being said, it was never a big purchase. It was usually Tiger Beat magazine or some kind of candy. Times were different! I think if the kids want to spend it on something that isn't harmful or inappropriate, they should be able to. That's what the lesson is, right? You save, you get to spend, and then you start the process over again. So I say let them spend it. What do you think? Let's help Jerry out and let me know on the TRY Facebook page.
